"Posters/commenters who're being intentionally offensive or using racist/homophobic/sexist/classist language inappropriately will be banned from the community."

Is the whole point of liberalism not the irrevokable right to express one's opinions? :S

I'm kind of mystified that the userinfo page here seems grossly biased and rather anti-liberal in fact. Liberalism is about freedom; yet a lot of the interests listed seem to be to do with boycotting and banning certain things. Can it be possible for a person to be liberal and wear Nike? I don't agree with the vegan viewpoint; am I still a liberal? I think I am, because although I don't agree with them I allow them to do as they please without hassle from me. You also list PETA, and I'm sorry but there is a group that makes me thing "fact-twisting, evil fascists". They won't respect people's right to eat meat; not very liberal of them.

So I have to wonder, is this community for truly Liberal people, or just for the pseudo-intellectual alterna-youths thronging in Bristol right now, listening to Rage, reading Stupid White Men and holding up "honk for peace signs"(effective; every time someone honks, George Bush's heart grows three sizes and a missile evaporates)?

I don't mean to be a troll, it's just that as a Bristol resident I think my views are relevant here. Sorry if you disagree, I respect your decision to though. ;)

I listed interests mostly so that people would find the community through the Livejournal search function, not to suggest you must believe all these things to be a member. I'm not a vegan but, I know a lot of liberals who are. Hence my adding it. I don't support PETA (in fact, my view of them is very similar to yours) but, again, a lot of liberals do. It wasn't meant to be guidelines, just a tool to get people here. Nothing more, nothing less.

Also, with the rules thing; that's simply a safeguard. Very often liberal communities find themselves the victim of 'trolling' from the various conservative communities (and vice versa). The way I see it, I want people to feel comfortable here and if there's members who feel the need to spout racist/homophobic/etc insults, that's going to encroach on that.

Re:

Hmm, fair enough. Thanks for clearing that up. :) Sorry for being presumptuous.

I think you'll find that all communities get trolled. Simple fact of good old LJ. I didn't think this many Bristolians were on LJ though, a couple of years ago it certainly wasn't this much. Did a directory search today and found a load o_0

It's okay, not a problem at all. It's good that you felt free to speak your mind, I'd say.

I did a wee directory search and was also surprised by the huge amount of Bristolians. We swarm like flies to the land of Livejournal.

Okay, just had a peek around your livejournal, icons and what-not and I do believe I might've seen you in the electronics department of John Lewis the other day. How bizarre!

Re:

Ye gods O_O Which day? Wha? There's two of me! Seriously. If by "the other day" you meant wednesday, then you saw Tom. If you meant thursday you saw me ;)

Haha, my amazingly sieve-like memory has led me to forget when I was in John Lewis. I've been to the Mall so many bloody times recently (my friend keeps dragging me up there so she can buy and return various gifts... Don't ask) that I'm losing track of when the visits were.

I came in for an iPod with my dad... Which I'm sure really narrows it down, eh? ;) I don't think the you (or your double) were the ones to serve us but, I tend to gaze around a lot when shopping and I'm sure I freakin' saw you.

Haha, will do! I'll keep an eye out for you.

And ooh, Spain, eh? Lucky you! It's safe to say I'm incredibly jealous right now.
